A rare and striking antique Japanese uchikake, dating 1920s-1940s, traditionally worn as a ceremonial over-kimono for weddings and formal rites of passage.

Crafted from a single bolt of silk, this piece carries a richly layered composition of pine trees—symbols of endurance and longevity—and folding fans, representing prosperity and the unfolding of one’s path. The artwork flows across a deep green background, accented with warm rust, olive, gold, black, cream, orange, and soft violet tones, reflecting the refined textile artistry of early 20th-century Japan.

Adorning the upper back are three traditional mokko (quince) family crests, an auspicious symbol associated with growth, harmony, and generational continuity. The presence of these crests signifies the garment’s role in formal and ceremonial settings.

Created using traditional yuzen dyeing and accented with hand-applied embroidery, this piece reflects the artistry reserved for Japan’s most formal garments of the early 20th century.

Unlike standard kimono, the uchikake is designed to be worn open, with a softly padded hem that allows it to drape with quiet weight and presence—originally trailing behind the wearer during significant life events.

Now, this piece exists as both wearable history and collectible textile art—equally suited for styling, display, or preservation.
